Folk for MS Charity Concert
The 19th
Annual FfMS Concert will take place on Saturday 7th June 2008. Artists
appearing: Johnny
Coppin is a singer, songwriter, composer and poetry anthologist. His clear
voice together with his ability to write fine songs make his music
essentially English in character while having universal appeal. He accompanies
himself with great virtuosity on guitar and piano. Johnny was a member of folk/rock band Decameron,
has supported Gerry Rafferty, Jasper Carrott and The Albion Band on tour and
appeared at Festivals in Britain, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland,
Holland and Belgium. TV appearances include programmes for the BBC, Channel
4 and HTV, while his radio work includes "Kaleidoscope" for BBC Radio
4, "West Country Christmas", the Arts Programme and "Folk on
Two" for BBC Radio Two. His music for theatre includes "Songs on
Lonely Roads" (the story of composer/poet Ivor Gurney) with David
Goodland, The Shrewsbury Theatre Guild's production of "Arthur's
Plough", as well as writing and directing the music for the Festival
Players Theatre Company and their touring productions of Shakespeare which
culminate in the Three Choirs Festival. He has also edited two poetry
anthologies of poems from the border counties of England & Wales plus "A
Country Christmas" - a collection of prose, poetry, carols, songs and folklore. Having played
together for many years in the English band “Cross o’th Hands” from
Derbyshire, Doug Eunson & Sarah Matthews are now performing as a duo.
With vocal harmonies, melodeons, fiddle and viola, they play English
traditional songs and dance tunes, with a little European influence added.
Their vibrant, rich sound has been pleasing audiences across the country as well
as in Canada where they have played two successful tours. Their latest CD “On
Shining Wings” was released last year and has received excellent reviews “a
wonderful mix of song and dance music, blending harmony in fine arrangement.” Paula and Stuart
have been singing together since the 1980s and have developed a repertoire
covering many genres of contemporary and traditional music. From
Joni Mitchell to Billy Holliday, Bob Dylan to James Taylor and Fairport
Convention to Fleetwood Mac, Paula's powerful voice, together with Stuart's harmonies
and many intricate fingerpicking guitar styles (including Ragtime, Classical,
Jazz and traditional Folk) ensure a varied mix of music, from songs to instrumentals.
More recently Stuart has also written and recorded some of his own
songs with “Sweet Child” winning the 2007 Banbury Folk Club song-writing
competition. Their daughters
Sarah and Kathryn began to join in occasionally at Paula & Stuart’s gigs and
gradually became fully involved as members of the family band. Sarah plays
bass guitar and tenor recorder and Kathryn plays flute, recorder and rhythm
guitar. They now take turns with Paula and Stuart in singing lead and backing
vocals. A new Studio CD
is in preparation, featuring some more original and well-known songs also
featuring solo performances from the girls, for release in Spring 2008. VINEGAR TOM Vinegar Tom is a
stunning new three part vocal group comprising three outstanding talents. Ian
Giles is a great traditional singer and one of the most recorded voices on
the English folk circuit. Ian is a member both of Magpie Lane and the Oxford
Waits as well as a former member of Folly Bridge and GMW. Darren Ormandy is
another a fine singer and an actor with Oxford’s Creation Theatre. He has
appeared in TV shows such as Casualty and Cider with Rosie, played theatres
up and down the country and is also a writer and director. The trio is completed
by bristolian actress and singer Kathryn Nutbeem. Kathryn trained at the
Royal Academy of Music on their musical theatre course and graduated in 2003.
Her moving performance of Somewhere Along the Road was viewed by millions
watching coverage of the 25th Anniversary of the end of the Falklands
conflict, on Horseguards Parade last year. Folk for M.S. has
been providing entertainment and raising funds for eighteen years and has
raised approximately £32,000 to date. The concert runs
from 8pm until midnight with doors opening at 7pm for food & drink. There
will be a licensed bar with local real ales. The kitchen will offer a small
selection of hot food, sandwiches, teas and coffees. TICKETS
